Real Time Drilling Operations Analysis

What is making real difference is the human interaction, ‘’ I can made you Ferrari but I cannot make you win formula race! ‘’, the ability to analyze and describe the problem, determine the cause, set recommendation, and find a solution, this require an expert eye and mind

As promised two examples for Real Time Drilling Operations Analysis

Drilling Operation Analysis#1

analyzing real-time data chart and setting recommendation

  • From 3:00 AM to 3:05 AM there are spots for TRQ increase ,then starting from (3:15 AM) applying WOB but by (3:25 AM )start to have bottom hole problem due to TRQ tendency to increase above Avg and change in RPM. then a drilling break happened after a period of up normal drilling parameters and the same time system lost circulating pressure and mud flow in , as total the conditions point to an alarm for a kick into wellbore by 3:55 AM
  • Driller start apply WOB, TRQ and RPM with avg. values, HKL decreases
  • Continue increasing WOB, TRQ is increasing than avg. and RPM decreasing (situation is not normal)
  • A sudden drilling break ROP form 0 ft./hr. to 35 ft./hr., as well increase of TRQ and start to lose circulating pressure and mud flow in as well
  • 3:55 AM there is a down hole condition problem that cause ROP to increase dramatically and suddenly (drilling break), and so TRQ to increase followed by SPP decrease and so mud flow in decrease

Potential Problem:

- Sudden ROP increase can be due to pressure trapped zone and potential for well kick situation and these are the indicators. All as seen in the above display:

1- Sudden increase in ROP

2- Increase in TRQ

3- Change in WOB and RPM

  • Drilling optimization recommendations would be made as a result of this information
  • Keep eye on the drilling for the upcoming depth interval in case of kick should be handled early to avoid NPT for well control situation to kill the well - recommendation: pore pressure prediction study as part of well design to predict up normal pressure zones
  • Note: Low SPP can be caused by washed out pipe or bit nozzle, loose joint or broken drill string, worn pump packing or liner

Drilling Operation Analysis#2

analyzing real-time data chart and setting recommendation

  • LOC situation just start by 2:05 AM before that just normal drilling till 1:40 AM then little over pull HKL increase at 1:45 AM, Avg ROP 4 ft. /hr., then almost no ROP with HKL increase, then LOC situation which is obvious from decrease of Active Pit Volume from 160 m3 to almost 150 m3 there are 10 m3 lost into formation and return is weak
  • Start of little drilling string over pull tell almost 1:45 AM where ROP = 0

Potential Problem:

  • At 2:15 am: Active Pit Volume is decreasing and so circulating system loosing pump pressure
  • Last event by 2:15 Am is an indicator for LOC situation, pump stopped and bit is off btm for flow check.
  • Drilling optimization recommendations would be keep eye on flow in and out and so SPP and set alarm trigger for optimum designed values - recommendation: pore pressure prediction study as part of well design to predict thief zones
